Waking rested after a full night's sleep

If one of these is you, start here.

CPAP hasn't worked for you

A treatment you don't wear can't help you. An appliance is far easier to live with.

How it works  →

You're diagnosed and want another option

Already have a sleep study? You may not need another. Send it over and we'll take it from there.

Send us your study  →

You snore, or you're tired every day

Never been tested? One night in your own bed answers the question for good.

About the home test  →

Sleep apnea isn't a snoring problem. It's a serious health problem.

Each time the airway closes, oxygen falls and the body jolts awake to reopen it — sometimes hundreds of times a night, with no memory of it by morning. Untreated, it raises the risk of:

  • Blood pressure that won't come down
  • Atrial fibrillation, heart attack and stroke
  • Type 2 diabetes and harder-to-control blood sugar
  • Daytime sleepiness — and drowsy driving
  • Morning headaches, brain fog and low mood

What untreated apnea does over time  →

A stethoscope, notepad, glasses and medications on a desk

A custom-fit device that holds the airway open.

The device fits over your teeth and holds the lower jaw gently forward, opening the space behind your tongue and keeping it open all night. No electricity, no hose, no mask — it travels in a case the size of a deck of cards.

The American Academy of Sleep Medicine recommends oral appliance therapy for adults who can't tolerate CPAP or prefer an alternative. We fine-tune it over several weeks, then retest you wearing it, so you know it's working.

Which one suits you depends on your bite and your dental work. Many more are available, and we choose together.

One night. Your own bed.

If you haven't been tested yet, you'll see Dr. Basi first. He reviews your medical and sleep history, your medications, and your risk factors — snoring, witnessed pauses, daytime sleepiness, blood pressure, weight — and determines whether a home sleep test is appropriate. If it is, you leave with a WatchPAT One: a single-use home test that uploads from your phone in the morning. Nothing to return, no lab, no second trip. A board-certified sleep physician reads and signs every study, and you get the full report.

Medicare

We can't perform home sleep testing for Medicare patients. Ask your physician to order the study, then bring us the result — everything after that is the same.

What the test is actually like  →

$300

Flat fee for the home sleep test, if Dr. Basi determines one is appropriate. Covers the device and the sleep physician's interpretation — no facility fee, no separate reading fee, and no second bill later. Self-pay, not billed to insurance.

No charge

Consultation, whether you've been tested or not. Referred or on your own, CPAP-intolerant or just weighing options — there's no office visit fee to see Dr. Basi.

Are you at risk?

Eight yes-or-no questions — the STOP-BANG screen used in clinics worldwide. Nothing you enter leaves your browser.

This estimates risk. Only a sleep study can diagnose sleep apnea, and we'll tell you honestly if we don't think you need us.

Do you snore loudly — enough to be heard through a closed door?

Are you often tired or sleepy during the day?

Has anyone seen you stop breathing, choke or gasp in your sleep?

Do you have high blood pressure?

Is your BMI over 35?

Are you over 50?

Is your shirt collar 16 inches or larger?

Are you male?

Covered by medical insurance. We file the claims.

Oral appliance therapy bills to medical insurance, not dental, and most plans cover it once sleep apnea is documented. We verify your benefits, give you a written estimate of your out-of-pocket cost before you commit, and file the claims on your behalf. Self-pay pricing is available too.

Policies vary enormously, even within one carrier. Once testing confirms you need an appliance, we verify your benefits in writing. There's nothing to sort out with your insurer first — that part is ours to handle. And if you don't have coverage, or would rather not involve insurance at all, we're glad to see you as a self-pay patient: one agreed price, in writing, before you commit to treatment.

We file claims to

  • Blue Cross Blue Shield
  • UnitedHealthcare
  • Aetna
  • Cigna Healthcare
  • Humana
  • Medicare Pending

We're out-of-network with these carriers. We file the claims for you, and you'll have a written estimate of your out-of-pocket cost in hand before committing to treatment.

Dr. Sanju Basi

Sanju Basi, DDS

Dr. Basi earned his dental degree at the University of Detroit Mercy in 2018 and practiced in Colorado before trading the mountains for the coastline to be closer to family. He has pursued dedicated training in dental sleep medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine.

This practice grew out of what he kept seeing in his own patients: people who had been exhausted for years, coming back six weeks after starting an appliance to describe a different life — a spouse back in the same bedroom, mornings without a headache, the drive home no longer a fight to stay awake. Those conversations are why this practice exists. Patients come to us from Rockland and across Knox, Waldo and Lincoln counties, and from every corner of Maine. Wherever you're coming from, we'd be glad to hear from you.

Frequently asked

What does it cost me?

It depends on your plan — usually a deductible plus coinsurance. We verify your benefits and hand you a written estimate before you commit to treatment.

Is it comfortable?

The first week takes getting used to; after that most patients stop noticing it. You can close your lips, swallow and drink water while wearing one.

What are the side effects?

Early on, extra saliva and mild morning jaw soreness. Over years, small bite changes are possible — which is why we take records at the start and check your bite at every visit.

Do I need a referral?

No — call us directly. We'll loop in your primary care provider as part of the process.

Do I have to give up my CPAP?

No. Many patients keep the machine for home and use an appliance for travel. The goal is treated sleep every night, not loyalty to one device.

Is this the same as a mouthguard sold online?

No. Boil-and-bite devices aren't custom, aren't adjustable, and aren't FDA-cleared to treat sleep apnea. They can damage your bite with nobody watching.
